Earning SAIS accreditation is the beginning of a continuous improvement journey, not the end of one. Accredited schools are expected to maintain their commitment to the SAIS standards and to fulfill the ongoing responsibilities outlined below throughout their five-year accreditation term.
What are the ongoing requirements of SAIS accreditation?
Two-Year Report
Accredited schools must submit an interim report to SAIS two years after their team visit. This report ensures continued compliance with all standards and indicators and documents the efforts made in addressing the visiting team’s recommendations and the school’s self-study goals. Demographic updates are also submitted each year as part of the annual membership dues renewal.
Membership in Good Standing
Schools must remain an active SAIS member in good standing with all annual membership dues paid in full. Schools must also abide by all SAIS policies and procedures in order to maintain their accreditation status.
Substantive Change Notification
Accredited schools must notify us in a timely manner of any substantive change using the Substantive Change Notification Form. Substantive changes include but are not limited to
- Head of school change or other significant leadership changes.
- Adding or contracting grade levels.
- Merger, name change, or mission change.
- Major construction.
- Crisis situation or litigation.
- School closure.
In the event of a substantive change, we may request additional information or conduct a visit to the school.
Records Retention
Accredited schools are required to implement and maintain a records retention system that meets applicable governmental requirements for all operating, financial, personnel, and student records. The system must apply to both paper and electronic records, include appropriate backup systems, and detail consistent processes for records destruction. In states where no governmental guidance is provided, schools should consult with the SAIS office to ensure appropriate access and maintenance of all relevant records.
